Programme Overview
Teaching Assistants comprise over a quarter of the workforce in mainstream schools in England. However, typical deployment has not led to improvements in outcomes. Further to this, evidence on TA deployment indicates that they are often used as an informal teaching resource for pupils in most need and in turn pupils become increasingly dependent on additional adults.
This programme aims to connect leaders with the research that shows the relatively straightforward changes that schools can make to enable TAs to work much more effectively, in ways that can have a potentially transformative effect on pupil outcomes. The recommended strategies will focus on maximising the use of TAs in everyday classroom contexts alongside consideration of the importance of high quality diagnostics and interventions.
This programme is underpinned by the EEF Guidance Report ’Making Best Use of Teaching Assistants. The programme has been designed to provide practical, evidence-based guidance to help primary and secondary schools make the best use of teaching assistants (TAs).
Outcomes:
✓ School leadership will understand the evidence base about deployment and practice of TAs.
✓ Deployment practices in schools will shift from proven ineffective practices to those which have a greater impact on outcomes for pupils.
✓ Support with the development of an implementation plan to bring the evidence to life in your school.
